In 1983 Togo ratified the Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and, in October 2005, the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights concerning Women's Rights.
However, Togolese women continue to face several discriminations and violations of their rights in all areas: legal, economic, political, socio-cultural. Gender-based violence is also deeply entrenched and widespread (including sexual and physical violence, early and forced marriage, etc.)
The general objective is to improve the information on gender equality in Togo and evaluate its consideration in development policies in order to support the Government of Togo and the European Union to integrate the questions of gender equality into development programs and projects.
