The Local Economy and Infrastructure Development (LEID) Project development objective is to improve infrastructure services and institutional capacity for increased tourism contribution to local economy in the regions of Armenia. The Project activities are expected to benefit the residents, tourists and enterprises particularly in Ararat, Kotayk, Lori, Syunik, Shirak and Vayots Dzor regions of Armenia.
Areni is a small village of about 1,600 inhabitants, located in the Vayoyz Dzor Province of Armenia, with a millennial winemaking tradition. The Areni area is home to one of the widest varieties of native grape types in the world and is well known for its wine-making industry. In addition, the Areni Cave where the excavations began in 2007 unearthed, large complexes, with an ancient wine press, traces of seeds, stems, and the compound that gives red wine its signature color, which led a wide array of scientists to conclude that the area was used as a winery about 6,000 years ago. Areni Cave is now recognized as the oldest winery in the world.
The objective of the present assignment is to develop a Conceptual Master plan, to be translated into detailed architectural and engineering design and Environmental and Social Management Plan for each site, outlined in the Master plan aiming at improving the Areni village infrastructures, establishing the facilities for visitors and turning Areni community into wine touristic center and integrating into south corridor tourist route of Armenia
