The main purpose of the project is to increase the experience of tourists and visitors and thereby to diversify the variety of tourist services, products and ultimately realize the development objectives of the wider Ethiopian Sustainable Tourism Development Project, which is to contribute to enhancement of the quality and variety of tourism products and services in targeted destinations so as to increase the volume of tourism, foreign exchange earnings, and jobs. The project involves cultural landscaping and physical measures which are expected to improve the Lalibela heritage site as a model destination in all aspects and to consolidate a lasting legacy of outstanding tourism, educational and conservational value for the current residents as well as generations to come. Its expected achievements are the following:

  • A greater number of local citizens participate in the income generated by tourism
  • The site of Lalibela has adopted international standards in terms of landscaping and interpretation
  • The layout of the visitor facilities can accommodate a greater number of tourists without harming the built structures and the archaeological spots.
