In 2000 the EC decided to extend the title of European Capital of Culture (ECoC) to cities in countries that were not members of the European Union during the period 2005-2019. This created the opportunity for Istanbul, under the coordination of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, to apply for the title of European Capital of Culture 2010. The project aims at supporting artistic and cultural projects in order to help Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture to fulfill its role on its way towards 2010 and demonstrate its cultural legacy and its cultural capacity in building up the metropolis’ future. In addition to serving to Istanbul’s commitments in the framework of European Capital of Culture towards 2010, this project will provide opportunities to foster Civil Society Dialogue between EU and Turkey in the field of arts and culture. The overall objective of the project is enhancing Istanbul’s role as a cultural catalyst amongst its geopolitical neighbors, strengthening bonds and fostering sustainable collaboration amongst artistic and cultural milieu between Europe and Turkey and attaining sustainable cultural governance policies.
