The overall objective of this assignment was to contribute to transparency in the country and to enhance the EC Delegation’s capacity to implement its mandate to monitor and report on political developments in the Maldives, in particular the 2008 Presidential Elections. The specific objective of the assignment was to provide continuous strategic analysis and reporting to the EC and EU Member States on the ongoing electoral processes and to provide inputs for confidence-enhancing demarches, during and after the elections. The experts have also provided advice on the elaboration of an EU declaration on the outcome of the election and the development of a common EU approach to the Maldives in the aftermath of the elections. The experts have formulated targeted recommendations on electoral reform by the country authorities, including the electoral authorities, with a view to the possible 2009 Legislative elections.
