Project Identification Mission for the project "Combat Trafficking of Children and Adolescents"

Sector:
Governance, Justice & Human rights, Social & Economic Development

Area: Asia and the Pacific
Country: Bangladesh
Period: 2005
Client: EC EuropeAid
Amount: € 125.000

Trafficking of humans is a serious crime which violates numerous human rights agreements, conventions, and laws. Thousands of children and women are trafficked each year across the world. It is estimated that in Bangladesh alone 10 – 20,000 women and children a year are trafficked within Bangladesh or to a neighbour country, for domestic servitude, the sex industry, hard labour, bonded labour, factory work, for girls child marriage, and for boys to be camel jockeys. The European Commission is committed to supporting the Government of Bangladesh in the implementation of its anti-trafficking strategy and to coordinating our efforts with the government and other donors. This commitment is supported by the European Commission’s national indicative programme (NIP) for 2006. Under the priority area ‘Human Rights and Democracy’ one of the Commission’s objectives is to support the GoB in its efforts to design and implement an appropriate counter-trafficking strategy, focusing on improving the effectiveness of stakeholders (central and local government, law enforcement officers, NGOs, community) and increasing civil society’s awareness and understanding of trafficking issues.
