The Gansu Provincial Government aims, through this project, to revitalize the tourism sector in the province in order to promote local economic development and alleviate poverty. To achieve this, ownership of the sites and revenues from tourism are expected to remain at the local level, with the Provincial Government providing coordination and establishing standards for tourism management at all sites in the province. The project includes infrastructure and environmental management investments at a carefully selected set of priority tourism sites, which include several significant cultural and natural relics, and ethnic communities where culturally-sensitive ethnic tourism parks are proposed. ARS Progetti supported the World Bank Team leader during the identification, preparation and appraisal stage of the project, giving expertise in the sector of Cultural Heritage and Tourism.
