In the last years, the Nigerian government has stepped up its efforts to effectively manage the consequences of irregular migration. In 2016, in order to respond more effectively to the problems generated by irregular migration, the government developed a Strategy to Combat Irregular Migration.

The implementation of the National Strategy to Combat Irregular Migration is based on an Action Plan which constitutes an important support for the achievement of the objectives defined in the Strategy, the objective is articulated around five pillars:

  • 1st Pillar: Measures related to the management of land, airport, river and lake frontiers;
  • 2nd Pillar: Prevention Measures at the Countries of Origin, Transit and Destination;
  • 3rd Pillar: Repressive and protective measures against migrant smuggling and human trafficking;
  • 4th Pillar: Repressive and protective measures against migrant smuggling and human trafficking;
  • 5th Pillar: Cross-cutting measures of data collection and management, monitoring and evaluation.

The overall objective of the mission is to technically support the Interministerial Committee for the National Migration Policy to operationalize the Strategy to Combat Irregular Migration in order to ensure effective and efficient implementation of the Strategy in line with the objectives pursued and the expected results.

The specific objective is to formulate an Implementation Action Plan in line with the strategic framework defined in the Strategy to Combat Irregular Migration.
