On July 2008, a bilateral Agreement between the Government of Zambia and the Government of the Republic of Botswana established the construction of the Kazungula Bridge, crossing this river between the borders of the two countries.

The project represents an important channel in support of improving the north-south linkages across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

The primary objective of the project is to significantly reduce transit time at the Kazungula border thus mitigate border uncertainties and associated high transport and trade cost. The project aims at providing vital transport infrastructure on the corridor that: (i) facilitates easy access for intra and inter-regional trade; (ii) facilitates easy access to international markets through connectivity with major seaports; (iii) contributes to maximizing the operational efficiency of the corridor, and (iv) promotes social and economic integration of the two countries.

The construction work is financed through a loan and grant received from the African Development Bank and Japan International Cooperation Agency in addition to own resources of the governments of Botswana and Zambia. The construction of the bridge and approach ramp works commenced on December 2014 with expected completion date of December 2018.

The Kazungula Bridge Project Office (KPBO) is mandated to coordinate the procurement and implementation of the project.

The objective of the Technical Assistance is to assist KBPO in carrying out their day-to-day project activities, prepare any required procedures, forms and templates, provide on-the job trainings, conduct workshops and seminars and identify training institutions for external training.

This project has two main specific objectives:

  1. Assist KPBO’s in the implementation of their monitoring activities related to the bridge construction
  2. Develop the capacity of KPBO’s staff and Executive Agencies in running day-to-day monitoring functions on the technical, legal and environmental aspects related to the implementation of the Kazungula Bridge Project.
