Several cities of the Republic of Haiti are crossed by gullies that have grown in importance over time. These gullies used to surround these cities, but anarchic urbanization has caused not only their magnitude in terms of flood flow but also their presence in the heart of the cities, especially Port au Prince, Les Cayes and Jérémie. Moreover, the vulnerability of these cities is amplified by the absence of drainage infrastructures that could instead contain the risk of flooding.
The general objective of the project is to contribute to the implementation of the Stormwater Management component and the protection of gully banks, and consequently the stabilization of the riverbeds of the cities benefiting from the URBAYITI program. The URBAYITI program aims to promote the economic and social development of Haiti and contribute to the resilience of the population through the improvement of the management and quality of life of the cities. This programme, financed by the European Union to the tune of 52.5 million euros, is spread over a period of four years and affects several municipalities in the country, including Port au Prince, Jérémie and Les Cayes, the beneficiary municipalities of this project.
